 | 01:32 am - Writer's Block: Top of the Charts
I've currently registered 137 plays of Status Quo – Rockin' All Over The World, making it the most-played song. I'm just slightly surprised. :)
Here, have a dynamic chart:

 | 11:23 pm It was a contest, though it ends tomorrow; it may already be a meme; heroprotagonist started the "Draw yourself at 100" thing.
I had an hour and a half to kill at the doctors office today, so ... if I live, I imagine I'll be a wryly gimmicky centenarian:

 | 09:30 pm - Happy birthday, Klaus! Still a few hours left of it (Norway time zone) ... enjoy them!
So I went to a birthday party today. First in ... how many years now?
(Red wine with the dinner.)
Then I went with Klaus and Yann to a social game of pétanque, arranged by the Alliance française de Bergen. I don't understand much French, and I speak less of it, but hey, it's fun.
We were divided into four teams. Ours lost the first match pretty soundly, but when we played the losers of the other (first) match, we beat them 13 to 2. Okay, I know it's just social, but I sure got in touch with my winner instinct.
(And after the game – pastis.)

 | 09:06 am - I ... live! Oh wow, I never posted another entry since my tonsillectomy?
I survived. Sorry if I had you worried. Or if this fact disappoints you ...
I've just been busy elsewhere. CPAN and Wikipedia, somewhat, but meatspace, mostly. I've been practicing, exercising, and otherwise preparing for reclaiming my life.
The operation was a success. Not only am I able to exert myself without ending up with another infection, I also sleep a whole lot better. (See, even the side effects were on-my-side effects.) And with this initial good fortune, I've worked myself in shape again. (Well, somewhat in shape. Sufficiently, I hope.)
I've reached the point where I've applied for jobs – the wrong time for such activities, perhaps, what with the crisis stuff going on (i.e. not much success so far), but hello world! whether you're ready or not, here I come.
To make time for all this reclaimed meatspace activity, I had to cut back on cyberspace activities. Including the time sink that LJ had become to me. Still, I thought I had at least told you I survived ... oh well. I blame the post-operation pain killers.
Here's hoping I'll remember to update this at least somewhat more frequently. No promises though – I also hope to be busy. :) Current Mood: hopeful

 | 04:46 pm - Tonsillectomy ho! (take 2) New countdown started. According to the plan, I will:- be admitted tomorrow morning,
- undergo surgery on Wednesday, and
- be released on Thursday.
That's right: If it happens this time, I'll spend at least two nights in hospital. Sounds like they've decided not to underestimate these tricksy tonsils. Current Mood: numb Current Music: Slow Motion - David Gray

 | 12:59 pm - Countdown stopped at T minus 10 minutes. The doctor was checking me before the operation, and he found that my tonsils were still inflamed. Fearing blood poisoning, he decided to postpone the operation.
So I'm back on antibiotics, and I likely won't have that operation until they've done their job.
The good news is that I can probably blame a lot of my health problems on this at-long-last-diagnosed chronic tonsillitis, so when I finally get rid of those germs' nests, I may end up a lot better.
But first, antibiotics. Bah. Current Mood: disappointed Current Music: Sunday Girl - Blondie

 | 02:11 am - Time for another test
The Everything Test There are many different types of tests on the internet today. Personality tests, purity tests, stereotype tests, political tests. But now, there is one test to rule them all. Traditionally, online tests would ask certain questions about your musical tastes or clothing for a stereotype, your experiences for a purity test, or deep questions for a personality test. We're turning that upside down - all the questions affect all the results, and we've got some innovative results too! Enjoy :-) | Personality | You are more logical than emotional, more concerned about self than concerned about others, more religious than atheist, more loner than dependent, more lazy than workaholic, more rebel than traditional, more engineering mind than artistic mind, more cynical than idealist, more leader than follower, and more introverted than extroverted.
As for specific personality traits, you are intellectual (67%), religious (60%), musical (56%). | | | Stereotypes | | Old Geezer | 83% | | Geek | 70% | | College Student | 63% | | | | Life Experience | | Sex | 31% | | Substances | 3% | | Travel | 3% | | Politics Your political views would best be described as Libertarian, whom you agree with around 47% of the time. | | Socioeconomic Your attitude toward life best associates you with Middle Class. You make more than -0% of those who have taken this test, and 100% less than the U.S. average. | If your life was a movie, it would be rated PG-13. By the way, your hottness rank is 50%, hotter than 72% of other test takers. | TAKE THE TEST brought to you by thatsurveysite

In other news, LastFM's recommendation system has some bugs, it seems. Right now, LastFM recommends Britney Spears to me, noting that she (in terms of listeners) is "similar to Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Ashlee Simpson and Jessica Simpson".
Which is all perfectly fine, except for the fact that in my (currently) 5608 registered plays on LastFM, there is not a single play for any of those artists.

 | 01:52 am - Merry Christmas! As is traditional, I've taken a Christmas vacation back home in good old dial-up-land. Well, I've been here for a few weeks already -- without preparations, it would be a poor Christmas.
By continental (derived from Hebrew) tradition, Christmas starts at sunset December 24th. However, the northern parts of Norway see neither sunrise nor sunset at this time of year, so Christmas starts at a conventional 5 PM, December 24th, by Norwegian tradition.
That Christmas ends at about 11 PM the same night -- or more precisely, as soon as the gifts are unwrapped -- that is a tradition from my late Grandmother. Judging by the stories I've heard, she always took the gifts rather too seriously, and her habit of pronouncing Christmas ended with the unwrapping of the gifts, is referenced without fail every Christmas Eve.
On that note, the haul:

So how long does Christmas last, according to Norwegian tradition? Looking at the calendar, you might get the impression that it lasts for two days: The 25th and 26th are "red" days. This however merely marks them as holy days. It is not unusual for the 26th to be a holiday (Boxing Day; the Day of St. Stephanus), but in Norway it has no name other than 2nd Christmas Day. Here, it is a tradition to keep holy the first two days of the three great feasts (Christmas, Easter, and the Pentecost) -- as opposed to merely the first day of the lesser ones. Either way, Christmas does not end on the 26th.
In modern Norwegian tradition, seven days are undeniable: The two "red" days and the five days wedged between these and the next one, the New Year's Day. These five days are referred to as "romjula". It is tempting to translate it as "Space Christmas", but the "space" referred to is just that between the holidays. While some have to work these days, some get time off. After New Year's Day, we're back to ordinary work weeks, so that could be said to be the extent of our modern Christmas.
Tradition would have it otherwise. Some traditions would have thirteen days of Christmas, and still many keep their Christmas decorations up until January 6th. My guess is this goes back to the Day of the Holy Three Kings, which is not observed in Norway since reformation, but coincides with these traditions' end of Christmas.
Competing traditions would have twenty days of Christmas. "Tyvende dags Knut driver jula ut," they say; the 20th Christmas Day should be a day to clean away all traces of Christmas. My guess is this goes back to the year 1700 (and the Christmas following), when Norway adopted the Gregorian calendar, which involved adjusted by twelve days. Julian New Year's Day in 1701 was January 12th, according to the Gregorian calendar. The day following would sound like a natural choice for cleaning up after the holidays, no?
What's certain is that Christmas does not last until Easter: Thereinbetween comes the Fast.
What's not certain is how long my Christmas vacation will be: I have yet to order a return ticket.
Meanwhile: Merry Christmas! (However long it lasts.) Current Mood: calm Current Music: ABBA: Happy New Year
